The renovated single-family house is located in the historic center of La Laguna, Tenerife, a UNESCO World Heritage City. Prior to renovation, the house was in ruins due to decades of abandonment. It is a traditional patio-house with massive walls and a wooden structure made of Canarian pine (Tea). Although its simple, symmetrical 18th-century façade retains its dignity, the house had been transformed, enlarged, and damaged over time, including a mid-20th-century extension at the back.
The intervention consisted of a comprehensive rehabilitation to restore the house’s use as a single-family home. The most recent rear extension was kept but remodeled to meet current needs. The patio was covered with a metal and glass structure, allowing the gallery and original wooden staircase to be opened up, enhancing the spatial experience and highlighting characteristic elements. New windows and doors were added to the previously blind rear façade, creating a modern façade that brings light and ventilation to the interior spaces facing the backyard.
The original roof was fully disassembled and restored due to deterioration, preserving its historic typology and layout. Salvaged tiles were reused to maintain the aged appearance and overall homogeneity. The renovation balances respect for the historic values of the building with contemporary design, successfully restoring its residential function while adapting it to modern living requirements.
