The project involves the comprehensive restoration of the parish complex of San Miguel Arcángel, which had suffered from a series of poor-quality interventions over time. The goal is to recover the intrinsic values of the historic architecture while complementing the parish’s functional needs with a simple and respectful contemporary design.
The proposal includes the reconstruction of the old hermitage of San Miguel de las Viñas (18th century) and its original entrance courtyard, removing later additions that obscure the building’s reading. The adjoining structures will be reconfigured to improve quality and functionality, expanding the church’s capacity. A particularly significant action is the rebuilding of the epistle wall, previously opened to enlarge the nave, which is understood as a typological wound.
The main entrance will now connect through the square, adapted for universal accessibility, while the original entry through the hermitage’s courtyard will also be recovered. A new volume is introduced to cover the exposed party wall of the neighboring building, designed not to exceed the height of the hermitage’s ridge. Its gable roof echoes the growth of traditional religious architecture, reinterpreted through a contemporary and neutral language that allows a harmonious dialogue with the historic construction.
